Tuesday; January 24, 2012. Temperature 2F at 5:30 a.m. with approximately three (3") inches of new snow on the ground this morning. Wyoming Road Report 1-888-996-7623 or http://wyoroad.info
Rick's SNOW REPORT: ( as of January 16, 2012 ) Got my second ride in for the year with a tour yesterday, January 15, 2012. Only minor changes to make since my last report. Temperatures have been much cooler this past week and no new settling has occurred. We received 6 to 8 inches of new snow on January 10. 2012 and 2 inches last night January 15, 2012. We could have used much more to cover all of the tracks. With another full house over the weekend there has been a lot of traffic and we now have a very hard packed snow base throughout most of the area. Overall base has improved on the top end to 50 to 75 inches in a few places, but dropped on the low end, here at the lodges, to 20 to 30 inches. Any amount of new snowfall will make for excellent riding.
My 1 to 10 analysis of our current riding conditions (10 being best):
As of January 16, 2012, at 9:00 AM:
Powder Riding - 4 : Our powder is now sugar snow. Most open areas have been packed hard by riders, and wind. I would rate this at a 4 because its still an 8 in the trees but a 1 in the open, hard packed country.
Boondocking - 8 : Conditions are great for boondocking. There is still 3 to 4 feet or more of soft sugar snow in the trees. The bad part is riding the hard pack to get there. The trails are smooth, but hard.
Cornice Jumping - 5 : Good cornices have formed, but landings are hard.
Trail Riding - 8 : 100% of trails are being groomed. Many riders for the past week and only 6 to 10 inches of fresh snow, have made it hard to maintain smoothness. All trails are still in pretty decent shape.
Snow Pack - 7 : Although we have lost some snow depth at the lodges, we have increased our base at higher elevations. The average snow depth throughout our entire riding area now varies from 20 to 75 inches.
Overall Riding Rating - 5 : We need fresh snow. Although you can ride from any of the three lodges to get to good riding, it is hard packed from the many riders and wind. There are some hills melted bare and still some valleys with 3 feet of soft sugar snow. Riders are still getting stuck climbing hills and no one has complained about the snow. We all just wish for more fresh powder.
Most Recent Snow - 2 inches on January 15, 2012 and 6 to 8 inches on January 10, 2012. Forecast - 3 inches of snow forecast for today, 1 inch for tonight, and lesser amounts throughout the week. Current Temperature - 6 degrees ( at 9 a.m. -- Monday; 1/16/2012 )
