SNOW REPORT: WIND, WIND, WIND, WIND AND MORE WIND. We have had wind almost every day for the past two weeks. One day we had 80 mile per hour sustained with 120 MPH gusts. Riders have asked how much new snow we have received over the past few weeks and we really can't say. The snow all came in horizontally and that's tough to measure. We have probably received 6 to 12 inches of new snow combined, but it is very difficult to say. Temperatures have remained cool these past two weeks. The wind has provided one positive result; it filled all of the old tracks. For awhile anyway. We are full at all three lodges again this weekend and will be quite busy making new tracks. We still have a hard packed snow base throughout most of the riding area with very deep snow in the trees for boon docking. Overall base has remained at 50 to 75 inches in 30% of the riding areas, 40 to 50 inches in 40% of the riding areas, 30 to 40 inches in 20% of the riding areas, and the remaining riding areas are at 20 to 30 inches. Sorry about the time between reports, but not much has changed except the new landscaping completed by the wind. Any amount of new snowfall will make for excellent riding.
My 1 to 10 analysis of our current riding conditions (10 being best):
As of February 1, 2012, at 10:00 AM:
Powder Riding - 4 : Our powder is sugar snow blown into the valleys and trees. Most open areas have been packed hard by riders, and wind. I would still rate this at a 4 because it's now a 9 in the trees but a 1 in the open, hard packed open country.
Boon docking - 7 : Conditions are still great for boon docking. There is still 3 to 4 feet or more of soft sugar snow in the trees. The bad part is riding the hard pack to get there. The trails are smooth, but hard.
Cornice Jumping - 5 : Good cornices have formed from all the wind, but landings are still hard.
Trail Riding - 9 : 100% of trails are being groomed. All trails are in great shape.
Snow Pack - 7 : Although we have lost some snow depth at the lodges, we have increased our base at higher elevations. The average snow depth throughout our entire riding area now varies from 20 to 75 inches.
Overall Riding Rating - 5 : We need fresh snow. Although you can ride from any of the three lodges to get to good riding, it is hard packed from the many riders and wind. Most hilltops are blown bare, but the valleys have been refilled. Riders are still getting stuck climbing hills in the interior parks and STILL, no one has complained about the snow. We all just wish for more fresh powder.
Most Recent Snow - 6 to 12 inches combined, since January 16, 2012.
Forecast - 2 inches of snow forecast for tonight, 1 inch for tomorrow.
Current Temperature - 29 degrees ( at 11:00 a.m. -- Wednesday; 2/1/2012 )
